STATEMENT: Clean Power PA Coalition Applauds Governor Wolf’s Veto of Resolution Attempting to Stop RGGI Program That Cuts Carbon Pollution
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HARRISBURG – (January 10, 2022) – The Clean Power PA Coalition today praised Governor Wolf for his veto of a legislative resolution (S.C.R.R.R. 1) that would stop PA’s participation in the successful, bipartisan Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), which would cut carbon pollution from dirty power plants and generate funds to be invested in the state’s economic recovery and lower consumer energy costs. Statement from Clean Power PA:
“Thank you to Governor Wolf for rejecting this misguided resolution and protecting this critical action to cut carbon pollution, cut consumer energy costs, and create jobs through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). With this veto, he is standing with the overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanians who support RGGI and standing up for the public’s health and for the state’s economic future.
“Polling has found that more than 7 in 10 Pennsylvania voters are in favor of the state becoming part of RGGI. Economic analysis of the program shows that it would create 27,000 jobs and boost the state economy by nearly $2 billion. It also will reduce asthma attacks and other health problems for thousands of Pennsylvania children and adults.
“The Governor’s veto aligns with Pennsylvanians’ desire to tackle climate change and invest in the high-quality clean energy jobs of the future. RGGI also will generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually, which could be used to help communities and workers affected by the continuing transition in our energy markets. Without RGGI, they could be left behind.”
