STATEMENT: Clean Power PA applauds Governor Shapiro’s agreement with regional electric grid operator PJM to stop electricity bill hikes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEWIDE – (January 29, 2025) – The Clean Power PA Coalition issued the following statement on Governor Shapiro’s settlement with PJM Interconnection, the company managing the electric grid for Pennsylvania and a dozen other states, which will save money for 65 million consumers, including 13 million Pennsylvanians:

“Governor Shapiro’s leadership prompted the announced settlement with PJM Interconnection, which is a huge victory for millions of people here in Pennsylvania and across our region. This important agreement will protect families from unnecessary electricity costs. Governor Shapiro’s lawsuit demanding changes in how PJM auctions off energy to generate electricity forced the grid operator to come to the table and reach a solution that will save billions for consumers.

“Governor Shapiro led the way for governors, state public utility commissions, and

energy and consumer advocates across the region to push back against proposed PJM actions that would only have led to higher electricity bills.

“We’re pleased PJM responded to Governor Shapiro in a constructive way that led to an agreement that protects consumers while keeping up with the rising demand for electricity. We hope this process can set the stage for future engagement to increase the supply of cheap and reliable energy connected to the grid.

“We urge PJM to now take immediate steps to clear its huge backlog of new, primarily clean, energy projects currently waiting to connect to the grid. Increasing the supply of cheap, clean, home-grown energy will keep electric bills down and ensure that we can keep the lights on even when the demand for electricity is at its highest.

“Less than 5% of the electricity produced for the PJM grid comes from cheap, clean energy sources like solar and wind. We need a more balanced and diversified array of energy sources to keep up with demand and ensure electricity is affordable. We hope this agreement will start us in that direction.”
